The attendance certificate for last week was won by Owls 2 (Mrs. Hall) class with 98.9% attendance.  Well done to Owls 2.   Overall attendance for the school was 96.3%.

INTERNATIONAL DAY

Tuesday, 26th September, is International Languages Day. As we teach French in school, we will focus on France and speaking French in the afternoon. The children can come dressed up for the day in red, white and blue. There will be a café open in the afternoon for the children to buy typical French food from. If your child would like to visit the café, please send in 50p on the day.

 

HOLLINGWORTH ACADEMY OPEN EVENING

On Wednesday, 4th October at 6.00 – 8.15pm, Hollingworth Academy will be holding an Open Evening for parents of Year 6 pupils.  All parents and Year 6 children are invited to attend.  More information to follow.

 

YEAR 6 APPLICATIONS TO HIGH SCHOOL

If your child is moving to high school next year, please be advised that the closing date for applications is Tuesday, 31st October 2017.

Dear Parents/Carers,

  • The new plan for the year has been sent home this week. Please put it on your fridge. If you haven’t received one, contact the school office.

All the children have settled into school extremely well, especially the new reception children. There is a lovely calm feel to school. The children are working extremely hard, especially to stay on the Always Board.

 This is your first newsletter of the year, so I have included some things to remember.

 

READING

It is really important that your child reads with you for at least 10 minutes everyday. Bedtime stories are enjoyable and a great way to enhance your child’s love of books. A child is never too old for a bedtime story, even year sixes!

 

ABSENCE

If your child is absent from school for any reason you must telephone the office before 9.00am every day of absence.

 

SICKNESS IN SCHOOL.

If your child is sick during the night or in school they must be off school for 48 hours. This is to prevent illnesses passing around school. Thank you for your co-operation.

 

HOLIDAYS DURING TERM TIME.

Children must not be taken on holiday during term time. Please ensure that holidays are booked during the school holidays. Children are only in school for 190 days per year. There will be no authorised holidays.

 

HEAD LICE

Unfortunately, as we return to school it usually means a return of head lice! Please check your children’s hair weekly and inform us if they have any. This way we can try to keep on top of them by telling other parents.

 

ENTERING AND LEAVING SCHOOL

Children should enter and leave school at the start and end of the day through their classrooms.  The children in the Finch Unit and Owls classes please enter through the Finch unit door.  The front entrance is only for children who have been to appointments. All children should be in school by 8:55am. Thank you.

 

AFTER SCHOOL CLUB AND BREAKFAST CLUB.

The after-school club began last Wednesday. It is open every night until 5:30pm. The first hour costs £3.50, £6 for two hours, which includes a snack. Children must be collected no later than 5.30pm and lateness will be charged at £1 for every 5 minutes.  There are lots of activities for the children to take part in. Breakfast club is open from 7:45am and costs £3.50 including breakfast and activities. Both clubs are in the school hall. There is no need to book in advance as this is a provision for parents and children. We appreciate that you may need child care at the last minute.  However, if you are calling at the end of the day to put your child into after school club, you must telephone school before 3.00pm as it has implications on staffing. Thank you.

 

FREE SCHOOL MEALS

Please see Mrs. Binns or Mrs. McGuigan in the office if you think you may be entitled to Free School Meals.

All children in reception, year one and two are entitled to a free lunch. Still apply if you are entitled and your child is in reception, year one or two.

 

CROSSING, STOPPING/PARKING OUTSIDE SCHOOL

As you know, we have a Crossing patrol outside school and on Wildhouse Lane. We ask that you use this service to cross the road; it is extremely dangerous to cross the road between parked cars. Also, can we remind parents that they must not stop or park on the zig-zag lines outside school, block or reverse in the entrance to the car park or block local residents’ driveways. Our residents do get very frustrated if they can’t leave their driveway.

   

PE KITS

All children must have a labelled PE kit in school – shorts, t-shirt and black pumps. Earrings must be removed or covered for PE. Thank you.

 

PERSONAL BELONGINGS

Please ensure that your child has their name clearly written on all of their belongings. That way it is far easier to return them to the right person if they are misplaced.

 

DINNER MONEY

Dinner money is £2.10 per day: £10.50 per week.  Please note, dinner money must be either paid in advance for the week or on a daily basis, as the school cannot afford to carry any debt.  Money should be sent to your child’s class teacher in an envelope marked with your child’s name, class and amount enclosed.  Cheques should be made payable to Crossgates with your child’s name and class written on the reverse.  Anyone wishing to pay in advance for the term should see Mrs. Binns or Mrs. McGuigan in the office.

 

FREE MILK

All children in reception, year one and two are entitled to a carton of free milk per day.   Following guidelines, all children will receive semi-skimmed milk.  If for any reason you do not wish your child to receive milk, please speak with their class teacher.

 

SCHOOL CLUBS

All extra-curricular clubs will start week beginning Monday, 18th September.  Please ensure that you have signed and returned a consent form as your child will not be able to take part without one. Clubs will be cancelled if the weather is bad, staff illness or due to staff training. If in doubt please ring the school first.  Please note, tennis club is only held in the summer term.

 

CAPTAIN’S TOP TABLE

Every week Sue, the school cook, selects a child from every class to sit at the ‘Captains Top Table’ on Friday lunchtime.  The children selected this week were: Arshi Fazal, Casey Minani, Vincent Lord, Summer Wheatley, Alessia Petrillo, Charlie Pryce, Grace Woodrup, Luke Mercer, Lewis Owens and Jack Hughen. Well done to you all.☺

 

SCHOOL COUNCIL AND RIGHTS AND RESPECT ELECTIONS

On Wednesday, 20th September, we will be holding School Council and Rights and Respect Team elections. If your child would like to be a School Councillor or on the Rights and Respecting team, please encourage them to prepare a short talk for their class about what they would like to do for school, make posters and maybe badges to wear on Election Day. We will be using official polling booths and ballot boxes.

 

YEAR 6 PLAYMAKER AWARD

Next week all the year six children will take part in the Playmaker Award. This will give them vital leadership skills to be great Best Buds and year sixes. A letter has been sent home about this.

 

MATHS, READING AND WRITING INFORMATION EVENING FOR NEW PARENTS

On Wednesday, 20th September at 6.00pm, we will be holding a meeting for parents of children in reception. During the evening the staff will cover how we teach reading, writing and maths and how you can support at home. It will be a really useful evening. I hope you can attend.

SCIENCE FOR CHILDREN

On Thursday, 28th September, some of our children will be attending a science show at Milnrow Parish. In the evening, at 6pm, there will be a community show for parents. If you would like to attend this show, please see Miss Clayton in Rosefinch.

Dear Parents and Carers,

 WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL

Welcome back to school and a very warm welcome to all the new foundation children and parents. We also welcome back Cally, who was discharged from hospital over the summer and will work at Crossgates until she is ready for high school. We are delighted to have her back. I hope you have had a great summer holiday and your children are ready to return to school keen and refreshed. We are looking forward to hearing about all the adventures they have had over the summer.

Over the summer, all classrooms have now been fitted with new boards. These will enhance teaching and learning. New toilets have been fitted in the Finches and Robins class. New carpets have been fitted in Wrens, Sparrows and Kestrels classes.

If you have been on our website recently, you will have noticed that it has been updated. This is so that you can use it on a tablet or phone. Also, over the summer, we have developed a Crossgates app which can be downloaded. This can be used on phones and tablets. Newsletters etc. will be automatically pulled through to it. I hope you find it useful.

This year, we will continue with the ‘Always Award’. This is for all the children who always do the right thing. Every child in school can achieve this. The children will receive a gold star sticker at the end of each week when they have remained on the always board.  They will collect these in their diary and at the end of a half term, when they have all their stickers; they will receive a gold star badge to wear. When they receive all 6 gold badges during the year, they will receive an always badge. Please encourage your child to work towards this and to wear their badges on their uniform.  We are also continuing with ‘Mile a Day’. All pupils and staff will walk a mile around school each day. There has been a lot of research around this and the evidence shows a difference in pupils fitness levels, emotional well-being and readiness for the classroom.

As in previous years, all the children have new school diaries to last the whole year. The diaries are a place for you and your child to record work and the reading they do at home.  There will be reminders in the diaries, a place for you to write any message for the class teacher and also a place for you to sign it each week.

We have set a diary for the year ahead and I will send it out to you ASAP so that you have plenty of notice about events. There will be times when we organise extra events, but we will always try to give you plenty of notice.

It is really important that your contact details are correct in school. Please complete the forms sent home and return them to school. We send lots of text messages out and your up-to-date mobile phone number is essential.

If your child is in reception, year one or two their school meals are free. All our meals are in line with the food standards for schools and are freshly prepared and cooked on the premises.

I would also like to remind you that children should not be taken on holiday during term time.  If a child misses one week of schooling then they have missed 25 sessions of learning. Children’s attendance should be 95% +.

I do hope that all the children have had lots of fun and excitement over the summer and are ready for another great school year. We are all really looking forward to working closely with you again this year and are very excited about the year ahead.
