SNACKS AT PLAYTIME

Just to remind you that we are a healthy school. Snacks at playtime must only be fruit, raw vegetables or breadsticks. Every now and again I can see other food items being brought in. The reason all schools have this rule in place is to protect children’s teeth. Anything sugary should be eaten at the 3 main meal times. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

KEY 103 SUPERHERO DAY

We have signed up to support Key 103 Superhero Day on Friday, 5th May. As last year, they are raising money for Wish Upon a Star. This is a great charity for very sick children and their families. We ask that the children come dressed as Superheroes for the day and donate £1 for the charity. Thank you.

YEAR 4 /5 SWIMMING LESSONS

There will be no swimming lessons the first week back after the Easter holiday.  Lessons will resume on Thursday, 27th April.

The attendance certificate for last week was won by the Rosefinch class, with a perfect attendance of 100%.  Well done to Rosefinch class.    Overall attendance for the school was 96.6%.

RED NOSE DAY

What a fantastic day! The staff took part in a ‘Lip Sync’ battle which I am sure the children will have told you all about already. It was great fun – although some of the younger children didn’t recognise the Abba songs.  Thank you for all the donations of food for the Rochdale Food Bank.  I am sure you will agree this is a great cause as it supports local people. We will continue to support the Food Bank; the donation box is in front of the fish tank in the main entrance if you would like to donate any food items. The cakes and biscuits sold at break time raised £161.00! Thank you for all your support.

A & B TEAM FOOTBALL MATCHES

On Thursday, 20th April, some of our year 5 and 6 children will be involved in a football match against St. Thomas’, Newhey and Milnrow Parish.  All games will be at home after school, please feel free to come along and support our teams.

MOBILE PHONES IN SCHOOL

Unfortunately, once again there has been an instance of a mobile phone being used to take photographs during family lunch.  Mobile phones MUST NOT be used in school at any time to make calls or take photographs.  Please note; if this continues to happen we will have no option but to cancel future family lunches.

CROSSGATES COOKS FOR KIDS

On Monday you should have received our new school meal menus, either a paper copy or by email.  The new menus will start when we return after the Easter holiday.  Spare copies can be found on the letter wall in the front entrance.

SAT’s WEEK

Please note during the week beginning Monday, 8th May 2017, our year 6 children will be involved in SAT’s tests.  It is very important that all children are in school during this week as tests can only be taken on certain days. More information will be sent out closer to the time.

ROBLOX

I don’t know if you have heard about this game/ social platform, but it has come to our attention that it is a very unsafe game to play on.

Children as young as 3 play on it, but sadly it is very open and there have been incidents of grooming on this game. If your child plays on it I suggest you delete it immediately.

I would also strongly recommend that you check your child’s phone; tablet etc. on a regular basis to ensure what they are doing is appropriate and safe.

Again, we have had incidents of children in school sending unkind messages to each other. We talk about this all the time in school and yet it still happens. They prove time and time again that they are too young to be using phones etc. Most of the social platforms they are on have an age restriction of 13. It has this restriction for a reason. Your children are ALL too young to be using these. Musically is a new way the children are sending messages, again there is very little protection within this. Please check what your children are using. Thank you.

The partner schools are from France, Italy, Finland and Greece. Many  thanks to the families who are hosting the children.

 TURNING IN FRONT OF SCHOOL

Whist I am outside school in the mornings I see many dangerous things. The most dangerous being those parents who complete a 3 point turn in front of school. I have seen parents actually mount the pavement where children are walking whist trying to complete this manoeuvre. This is unacceptable.  If you do this then please take 2 minutes to drive up the road to turn around safely, or park further away. It is everybody’s responsibility to keep our children safe. Thank you.

E-SAFETY

This week the children have been learning about e-safety. E-safety is so important and having open discussions with your children from a young age about it is vital. A useful website for parents to use is – www.internetmatters.org. It is every parent’s duty of care to safeguard their children whilst using the internet.

Children should be restricted in their use and use anything to do with the internet in a family space, not their bedrooms.  We always recommend to the children that any mobile devices are charged in the kitchen overnight and not their bedrooms. This is a good habit to get into from an early age.

I would also like to remind everyone that the age restrictions for Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram are 13. It is 13 for a reason; young children are not mature enough to be using them. Children at Crossgates should not be using any of these social networking sites.  We are aware that they do and if your child is, please monitor their activity.  If you would like any more information please contact school.

YEAR FOUR RESIDENTIAL

On Friday, 17th February, year 4 children will be going on their very exciting residential to Robinwood. We will be leaving school at 12 noon. Please come along to wave your child off. We will return to school on Saturday, 18th February at 12:45pm. If you haven’t got a kit list, please ask your class teacher for one. Year 4 children should arrive on Friday, ready for their first activity.

AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS

Please can parents/carers who are picking up their children from extra-curricular clubs i.e. karate, One Goal, football, netball etc., please wait in the front entrance and your child will be brought to you by the teacher once the club has finished.

TURNING OUTSIDE SCHOOL/ PARKING ACROSS DRIVES

On Tuesday morning we had two near misses outside school when cars mounted the pavement to turn around.  I am sure that you will agree this is extremely dangerous and for the sake of adding a couple of seconds to your journey, driving to the end of the road and turning round, is completely avoidable. Also, please avoid parking across resident’s drives.  It is very frustrating for our neighbours who need to get in or out of their drives. I am sure you appreciate how frustrating this is.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate in calling into school.

PE KIT

We are having lots of issues with children not having appropriate PE kit in school, especially pumps.

Pumps in our school are very important as our hall is used for so many activities and it could become a hazard for children without pumps.

PE kit – must be in school every day.

  • T shirt
  • Shorts
  • Pumps

The perfect PE kit:

Football kits are not allowed in school.

Games kit – can be left in school all term or can be brought on the day of games. We appreciate that they may be needed for other clubs.

  • Tracksuit or a change of trousers and sweatshirt/jumper
  • Trainers

It is also really useful if kit bags have a spare pair of socks in them just in case socks get wet during games or girls are wearing tights. All kit must have the child’s name in.

Tape or plasters must be in kit bags if your child has earrings. Alternatively they must be removed. Long hair must be tied up

We really appreciate your assistance in this matter as all pupils have to take part in PE as part of the curriculum.

CHOKING HAZARDS

In school we are following health and safety guidelines around grapes, cherry tomatoes and any other food which could cause a child to choke. The advice is that they are chopped in half or ideally quartered. If you are providing food like this in packed lunches or as snacks for playtime, please could you ensure that they are quartered. Many thanks.
