World Book Day 2024

We celebrate World Book Day as a whole school project. The children read 'The Midnight Fair' by Gideon Steer. The story is a spectacular, surreal and cinematic wordless picture book about the secret life of animals.
Far from the city, but not quite in the countryside, lies a fairground. When night falls, and the fair is empty, something unexpected happens. Wild animals emerge from the trees, a brave raccoon pulls a lever, and the rollercoasters and rides explode back into bright, neon life. Now it’s time for the woodland creatures to have some fun…

Author Visits

We love to have local authors come and visit us at Crossgates. The children get to know where ideas come from and how characters are brought alive. They are let into secrets. A good author visit is full of great book recommendations, overflowing enthusiasm, brilliant ideas for writing, useful tips, encouragement to keep trying, real-life stories of meeting rejection but not giving up.

This year we have had visits from:

Faye Evans         Jude Lennon       Simon Hunt

Library Visits

We take regular trips to Milnrow library. Local library visits have the potential to strengthen children's confidence around books and library usership and supports them to further develop their reader identities alongside their enjoyment of reading.

Reading Buddies

Pairing up older readers with younger pupils or siblings as reading buddies can have a lasting impact on the confidence and literacy levels of both readers. Especially struggling and reluctant readers.
